Government Transparency Ratings

While the State of Alaska and many local governments have explicit public record laws they don't always respond to public records requests or purposely obfuscate the data in their response. This page serves as a resource for the public wondering whether or not their state and local government follow their public records laws and policies.

Ratings Definitions


A
This organization provides public records in a reasonable format and timely manner. In addition, there is a clear location to send requests for salary information.
B
This organization provides public records in a reasonable format in a relatively timely manner but does not have a shared mailbox or other centralized location to submit requests.
C
This organization provides public records in a reasonable format but has an arcane process for requesting records or takes an extremely long time to provide public records.
D
This organization obfuscates public records providing them in a format that is difficult to use and which likely cost the government or organization more to produce than just providing the original records.
F
This organization refuses to provide access to public records or makes the process of retrieving the records so onerous as to be practically impossible.

Group Ratings


A

University of Alaska

The University of Alaska has an official Board of Regents policy to support public records requests. Additionally, the University is responsive to requests and provides public records in a usable format.

Matanuska-Susitna Borough

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has a public records right codified in the borough code. The Alaska Salary Database has not requested information directly from the Borough

Municipality of Anchorage

The Municipality of Anchorage has a public records right codified in the municipal code. Although the Alaska Salary Database has not requested information directly from the Municipality, it is our understanding that the Municipality has been responsive in the past and has consistently provided data in a usable format.

State of Alaska

The State of Alaska has a public records right codified in state statute. The Alaska Salary Database has not yet interacted directly with the State of Alaska but based on other public releases of salary and compensation information in addition to releases to the media we're comfortable rating the State of Alaska "B".

Anchorage School District

The Anchorage School District appears to follow the public records law for the Municipality of Anchorage. We have not directly received information from ASD, but they appear to have been responsive to other parties.

Juneau

The City and Borough of Juneau has a public records right codified in city code. Although we haven't requested information directly from Juneau, they have previously provided data to other parties in a reasonable format.

Fairbanks

The Fairbanks North Star Borough has a public records right codified in borough code. Unfortunately, they have previous provided other parties records in an obfuscated way.

City of Ketchikan

The City of Ketchikan does not have a right to public records specifically in city code. Additionally, the City of Ketchikan has previously provided records to other parties in an obfuscated manner.
